We like the Total Defence Day celebrated in our school recently. We learnt to understand how war time was like in Singapore before in 1942. It made us realise that we must treasure peace and harmony in our country.
The boys said, "We will grow up to be strong men and defend Singapore."
The girls said, "Although we won't be in the army, we can still do our part. We will always stand up for Singapore."

Mrs Ella Ong said...

Pupils from Pr 6 Love says:

The biscuits have never tasted so good until we understood what our forefathers went through during the war. We will study hard and grow up to be good and useful citizens to help defend our country. We will also preserve racial and religious harmony and be good children of Singapore.

We enjoyed the presentation. Some of the pictures evoked strong emotions, for example, sorrow. We learnt a great deal. Total Defence is really virtuous. It makes us feel secure as we know what to do in times of emergencies. War is horrible as there is so much suffering :physical and mental, among others. Together, we'll protect and defend Singapore if there's a crisis.

Hi we are P5 Kindness. We reflect on the skit by P6 Harmony and felt that they have done a good job in bringing Total Defence closer and more meaningful to us. Initially we were unfamiliar with the 5 types of Defences and had difficulty remembering them. Upon class reflection and discussion, we have come up with an acronym: C.E.M.P.S. They are Civil, Economic, Military, Psychological and Social. The food rationing drill has made many of us realise how fortunate we are. We should be contented with what we have. Many of us refused to drink the Newater but upon reflection, we felt bad about it. Imagine if there is no water. Moreover we should have faith in our Newater Plant. Singapore products are well-received world-wide. Why not Newater? The TD Week is a good learning platform for each and everyone of us.

We found the presentation interesting and useful. It teaches us to be ready.
We are grateful we are now living in peace and not during the war.
We hope Singapore will always be a safe place to live.
We will stay and defend Singapore if the need arises.

The total defence day last year and now was different. The difference is that the biscuits and water tasted better as i understand more about the TDD and it makes me feel very fortunate as compared to the victims last time,as we have alot of food to eat now.

Total Defence Day is a important day for Singapore. When the Japanese attack us, we cannot protect ourselves as Singapore thought that the British will protect us. During the war, many innocent people died. So we commemorate Total Defence Day be prepared for any emergancies.

We commemorate Total Defence day in school on 13 Feb.we ate plain biscuits and water. It doesn't taste really good, but when we remembered the soldiers who stood up for Singapore, those who fought for Singapore. We will study hard to be good Singaporeans to contribute to the economic defence.

We were given biscuits and NEWater on Total Defence Day. Many said the biscuits were plain and ate it unwillingly. For NEWater, they refused to drink it.After the presentation in the hall,we went for our reccess. That's where i saw alot of people trying to get rid of a FULL bottle of NEWater by pouring them out in the basin and throwing it into the recycling bin. What a waste! Some of my friends attempted to do it,but i stopped them in time.I told them that they should not waste water!Such acts on Total Defence Day are really very shameful.:(

The commemorating of Total Defence Day for this year is different. We had an English test for the first thing in the morning. In the middle of doing our test, the bell for the fire drill suddenly sounded and we had to leave our test halfway done. When we came back for only about half an hour we had to go to the hall to listen to a talk held by Mr.Zudof the 5 defences. After that we had a feast of biscuits and NEWater. Many of my friends including me noticed that the brand of biscuit is different and reluctantly ate it.For the NEWater, I couldn't stand the smell of the NEWater and sort of poured it away. Thought, I did drink a little of it. I knew I was wasting water but my stomach just cannot take it. =P

I think this year's total defense day was extremely intresting as the talk from Mr Razali taught about what to do when terrorists attacks. However, the biscuits tasted terrible so i can understand how the victims in world war 2 suffered.Maybe, they don't even have biscuits to eat.I think we are really lucky to be born in Singapore.

We commemorate Total Defence Day in our school on 13 Feb.On that day,we did food rationing, but it was not food rationing to me because other people keep giving me biscuits as they don't want thiers.Although the biscuits did not taste that good but I still ate it because in real war we won't get biscuits at all.We learned about the 5 Defence and we can play a part in it by studying hard and joining the National Service. We must learn what to do during emergencies to know what we can do during a real emergency.

I now know that our forefathers suffered more than us.We should be happy and not choosy about things because we now have sufficent water, food and stationery materials unlike the people who suffered during the war.We should not waste our supplies now because when our homeland,Singapore, gets attacked again,we will be ready.

I liked this year's Total Defence Day because of the video clips.I hope we will have something like this next year because the clips were very meaningful and teach us a lot about Total Defence. The food rationing was fine but the water was not. There was even a little boy who tried to put the bottle inside the plastic bag before he finished the water. But I bet he would have finished the water if there was really no water to drink.

After I've thought for a while then I relised that its Total Defence day today(15 Feb)!Although the fire drill had disturbed our mock test, but it was good because we took more than 1 hour instead of 1 hour to finish it! Then after,we assembled at the quadrangle.During the presentation of Mr Zad's,many of the boys wanted girls to be army but for me, I REJECT!We learnt how to defend ourselves and the pictures are scary but i wish there were more.We had the food rationing there. Our class were given 5 pieces of biscuit and a bottle of water each. The biscuit was nice but its difficult to swallow because it's sticky, but I finish it then drank the whole bottle of water. This commemorating of Total Defence Day was fun and I wish it would be like this next year!

Although we were given biscuits, it taste plain and teacher gave us many butI just ate a few pieces then threw the rest in the big and black rubbish bin. Some felt that the NEWater was disgusting as Mr.Tan said that we were drinking some of our own as the NEWater is a kind of reused water. So after the presentation by Mr.Zad,we went for recess and some of them poured the bottle NEWater into the basin and threw the empty bottle into the recycling bin.I felt that the act is very shameful.

During the panel of experts talk,A topic we were disccussing was 'Should girls go for national service?' One of the P6 boy said that boys should be househusbands and girls should go for national service. i don't agree with this suggestion because this means that the boys are irresponsible as they are trying pushing the hard work to the girls and enjoy themselves.Adding the girls to the national service with the boys is actually trying to be STRONGER in defence. If the girls are to do these ALONE as what the boys are doing now, isn't it the same?

Food Rationing?

1.Learnt how our great-grandparents in the past suffered in times of war.

2.Must remember people who were affected by WW2 did not have any food, we must not be fussy about food.

3.Whenever there is war and there is no food, we will be fine because we are already trained.

Animations on National Education

1. Bean fell down on a rainy day and grew up to be a tree- must not give up in times of trouble
2. The seeds mixed up together- we need to share and play together.
3. The video on the bomb by the jet and fire was made from clay- showing WW2 and how we must defend ourselves.
4. The babies that climbed up the blocks to get the milk- have to make friends and help each other.
5. The girls building sandcastles and a boy knocked it down- even though we have a small country we have a big heart.

After some talks from the experts, I realised that if we play around during emergencies, we could cause lives. We fellow Singaporeans must always be ready for anything, no matter where it happens, or when it happens. We must also not flee our countries in times of crisis like war, food and water shortage. Those who run away are people who only care for themselves, not aboutthe country they live in. Those are the people not loyal to their country. So no matter what happens, we must defend our country.

6 Peace: We learnt that we must be alert and vigilant at all times. To also listen to instructions during emergencies. Do not panic but know that everyone can play a part.
